Laser Hair Removal Q & A
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a painless, noninvasive treatment that uses advanced cosmetic laser technology to effectively deactivate, or switch off, active-growth hair follicles.
When passed over the surface of your skin, the laser delivers short pulses of energy directly into each active-growth follicle, where it’s absorbed by darker pigments in the hair shaft.
As the energy seeps down to the root of each follicle, it disrupts the follicle’s stability, leaving it unable to produce hair.
The type of laser used in hair removal treatments is a gentle, noninvasive, and preferential technology, which means it targets active-growth hair follicles without having an adverse effect on surrounding skin tissues.
Can laser hair removal be used anywhere?
Laser hair removal is safe to use on any skin type and is effective on both large and small treatment areas. It can be used on most areas of your body, including:
- Upper lip and chin
- Nose and ears
- Side of the face and neck
- Chest, back, and shoulders
- Underarm area
- Bikini area and legs
Laser hair removal shouldn’t be used to permanently thin or shape your eyebrows, however, as the laser’s energy can inadvertently damage your ocular tissues.
What is laser hair removal like?
Laser hair removal is a quick and relatively pain-free procedure that lasts 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the overall size and follicle density of the treatment area. Before your session begins, you’ll receive eye shields to protect your retinas and corneas from the laser.
As the laser’s specialized handpiece is systematically passed over the treatment area, you’ll feel the short pulse of energy it sends into each targeted follicle.
Although this mild, brief sensation is well-tolerated by most people, a topical numbing cream helps ensure optimal comfort when treating more sensitive areas of skin.
How many treatments will I need?
Because hair grows in cycles, most men and women require several laser hair removal sessions to achieve optimal results. The laser won’t work on follicles that are in their resting or shedding phase.
To ensure the treatment catches every hair follicle in its active-growth phase, laser hair removal sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart.
After your first session, you can expect to see a 10% to 25% reduction in hair in the treatment area. While permanent hair removal is never guaranteed, many people achieve complete or near-complete hair removal in just five to seven sessions.
*Individual results may vary.
